Book Review:
COLLECTING ROLEX GMT-MASTER WRISTWATCHES

I own nearly every book published by noted Rolex expert and author Guido Mondani, but I don't think I've been any more impressed than by one of his latest works, COLLECTING ROLEX GMT-MASTER WRISTWATCHES.  The book is co-authored by Lele Ravagnani, with Guido Mondani also being listed as the editor.

Those familiar with some of Mondani's previous works will immediately recognize the style and layout of this book.  Each written page is split with text translations in both Italian and English, and the photography and production quality throughout is up to the usual high standards Rolex enthusiasts have come to expect from Mondani:

COLLECTING ROLEX GMT-MASTER WRISTWATCHES goes into a rarely seen level of depth - every known GMT Master reference and variation is examined in detail.  This is no mere coffee table picture book - it's rich in detail, discussing the minute characteristics and features which separate the various GMT references.  Not only does the book cover all the vintage GMT II references, it also covers contemporary references as well:

It also highlights extremely rare models.  For instance, did you know an all-blue bezel version of the GMT Master exists?

I did note that the book does not make mention of the ultra-rare versions of the GMT Master II 16710 which contain the caliber 3186 - a variation which I own and did an article on which you can read about by clicking here.  I suspect this particular revelation became known shortly after the publication of this book, so I'll hope that information about the 16710-3186 becomes documented in a later, updated edition.

For every model discussed, photos are shown from several different views, with many examples having their case backs removed and the movements photographed - a particularly nice touch.  Showing these models in such detail is a boon for the collector who is trying to determine if a watch they're considering acquiring is counterfeit or altered from its original condition:

COLLECTING ROLEX GMT-MASTER WRISTWATCHES is a must-have, comprehensive volume for serious collectors and enthusiasts of the Rolex GMT Master line.   It combines historical, technical, and exhaustive reference material into a book that I can enthusiastically recommend without reservation.  It's easily the most complete, and well done book I've seen come from Mondani and company.   COLLECTING ROLEX GMT-MASTER WRISTWATCHES can be ordered from Mondani's own website COLLECTING WATCHES for € 250,00 plus shipping by clicking HERE.  At today's exchange rate, 250 Euro translates to a bit over $300.00 US.  For collectors who will use this book to help them make good buying decisions and avoid costly mistakes, the book can easily pay for itself with one transaction.  For the more casual Rolex enthusiast, the price tag may be difficult to justify, but this is one book which justifies its price tag by virtue of the quality and completeness presented.  I could not be any more impressed.
