I headed out the morning of Thursday Sept. 20th with the intention of spending a long weekend in San Diego - 2007 has been the absolute worst year for on time air travel for me.  I flew out from Dayton for a connecting flight in Dallas and was delayed there for about three hours.  But at least my flight wasn't cancelled altogether as was the case when I flew out to Monterey earlier this Summer.  Frustrating, but I tried to focus on what promised to be an absolutely amazing weekend as a media guest of Breitling at the 2007 Red Bull Air Race World Series in San Diego.

This was my first trip to San Diego, and as such, I wasnt prepared for the view outside my window seat during landing.  Im not talking about white sandy beaches and indigo water, which were certainly spectacular.  What Im talking about is how disturbingly close our plane came to the buildings of San Diego, as our route took us not above or around the downtown area, but rather through the skyscrapers of downtown San Diego.   Heres a photo I took later in the weekend of a commercial plane landing which  will show that Im not exaggerating in the slightest:

Breitling was kind enough to have a limo driver pick me up from the airport, and we made the roughly 25 minute drive from the San Diego airport, across the Coronado bridge to the island of Coronado.  When I mentioned to friends whod been to the San Diego area that I was headed there this weekend, they asked where are you staying?  The Del Coronado Id answer.  Youre staying and the Del?!?! they would exclaim in shock and envy.  I now understand why - Ive stayed at some pretty nice places, like The Wynn in Las Vegas, and The Fountaine Bleu in Miami.  But the Del is easily the most beautiful and luxurious hotel Ive had the pleasure of visiting.  When we arrived, I dropped off my luggage with the front desk and took a little tour of the property.

The Dels clientele has excellent taste in supercars:

Here's a view of the pool area which overlooks the beach:

I headed inside for a few shots of the lobby area of this historic hotel:

Here's my 5th floor room in the Ocean Front Towers:

After I unpacked, I changed for dinner and I met up with the wonderful folks from Breitling.  We drove to the first of several fantastic restaurants wed visit this weekend called Peohes a charming ocean front seafood restaurant in Coronado:

The food was fantastic and it was great catching up with friends I hadn't seen since the Reno Air Show last year:

The view of the San Diego skyline we had while we ate was just too stunning - I stepped outside onto the pier and grabbed this photo:

After dinner we headed back to the Del Coronado for some shut eye as we had an action packed weekend ahead of us!
